Cancer. Unexpected death. Troubles will finances. Divorce. Adultery. All bad things. Why do these things happen to God’s people, though? Have you ever wondered? If you are like most, this question or one like it has gone through your mind many times. The answer to this question can be found in this video below published by Southern Seminary.
Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?
Why would a good God allow suffering to occur? Well, part of the answer is because evil exists. It exists because of our own or more specifically Adam and Eve’s sin. It can also be allowed by God in order to mature us and make Himself known through our suffering. In the video, a story of a cancer diagnosis is used to explain the “good” that can come from the bad like an illness. Such an event, though difficult, can force a believer to rely on God’s provision for the entire day, each and every minute. Often times, the relationship that you can build through suffering is much more meaningful and deep when compared to the one you develop while enjoying a life of ease.
You May Never Know
It’s important to remember that although there is always meaning in suffering, said meaning isn’t always known this side of heaven. You should never assume your suffering is the result of your actions or inactions. However, you can pray for meaning. Ask God why. That’s okay, He’s a big enough God to take your questions.
After all, even Jesus asked “why” in Matthew 27:46 when He prayed “‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? (which means my God, my God, why have You forsaken me?)” while hanging on the cross. If even Jesus can ask “why” we can too. However, know that you might not ever get the answer you seek. Therefore, in some ways, it’s best to seek a deeper relationship with God through the process and accept that God has allowed your suffering for a purpose, even one that remains hidden.
